Course Format
Preventing and managing conflict is NOT a “knowledge-based” skill. Therefore, our revised and updated instructor course is not about just learning how to present content via a traditional training approach (i.e., sit in a class while the instructors drone through dozens of presentation slides).
Instead, we take a unique approach that uses empirical-research-based training methods that are proven to create relatively permanent changes in your student’s behavior that result in the benefits you are seeking within your organization.
These methods include:
- Using scenarios to unpack the approaches, methods, and strategies
- Frequent participant and instructor feedback for just-in-time learning
- Clear objectives, rubrics, and success criteria so that instructors know what high-quality instruction looks like, sounds like, and feels like
- Personal participant reflection and critique for personal growth as an instructor
- Partnership with other world-class instructors to grow and refine your talents

When you take this course, your conflict management skills will get developed via a comprehensive training system that includes the following:
- A shipped box of courseware for use during the training
- A private online portal at VistelarAcademy.com that will serve as your class cohort’s hub for the duration of the course
- An Online On-Demand Course that will provide you with a foundational understanding of the Vistelar conflict management principles and methods (requires about two hours of time to complete).
- A few hours (depending on your current competency with the material, as many as eight) of other pre-work which includes watching videos and submitting assignments in the form of audio and video recordings to maximize the value of the instructor-led session
- One interactive six-hour Virtual Training session that includes demonstrations, videos, class discussions, group work, Q&A, and designated time for practice (note: class size is limited).
This session will be led by our professional subject matter experts and recordings of this session will be available within your online class portal. During these sessions, you will have the opportunity to role-play conflict situations specific to your job to develop lasting skills in the methods taught.

Trainer Biographies
Dave Young
Hello, I’m Dave Young, Director of Training for Vistelar, and I’ve dedicated my life to keeping people safe. I’m a law enforcement and Marine Corps veteran and I’m well known for testing public safety equipment. I also used to host a show on National Geographic called “Crash Test Human.” Learn more about Dave.
Experience
Dave graduated from his first law enforcement academy in 1985. He served as law enforcement officer in Florida and in the U.S. Marine Corps as a gate sentry, patrol officer, watch commander, investigator, Special Reaction Team (SRT) member, leader and commander. He serves as a defensive tactics consultant specializing in disturbance response strategies for numerous police and correctional agencies. Dave also is an industry leader in testing public safety equipment and non-lethal weaponry. He applied all of this expertise as host of “Crash Test Human,” a TV series for National Geographic in which he personally tested a variety of emergency scenarios such as being trapped inside a car submerged in water.
Dave creates realistic training that allows participants to experience the stress of real-world confrontations in a safe environment that allows them to gain confidence in themselves, their tactics, and their equipment. One of his mottos: “Practice isn’t something you do until you get it right. It’s something you do until you cannot get it wrong.”
